Great Falls College MSU offers study abroad opportunity in Italy
Venice, Italy is one of the four cities to be visited including Florence, Verona, and Lake Garda.
GREAT FALLS – In June 2018, Great Falls College MSU is planning an opportunity for students and community members to travel, sing and study in Italy.
Great Falls College MSU and the Center for Lifelong Learning are organizing a trip that is open to GFC MSU students, community members and Great Falls College Community Choir members.
The 10-day trip, scheduled for June 1-10, 2018, will include visits to four cities in Italy: Florence, Verona, Venice and Lake Garda.
Before the trip, Great Falls College MSU will offer a humanities course focusing on western civilization and Italian history. Students will learn about the architecture, art and music of Italy.
"During the trip, participants will know what they are seeing and be able to appreciate the experience more because they will have background knowledge," said Cynthia Stevens, department chair of Fine Arts and Humanities at GFC MSU.
Those going on the Italy trip have the option of taking the class for college credit or as a non-credit class through GFC MSU's Center for Lifelong Learning.
Members of the Great Falls College Community Choir will perform in the Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence. They will sing John Rutter's Requiem, under the direction of John Rutter.
"John Rutter is arguably the most famous living choral conductor/composer of our time," Stevens said. "He is internationally known."
Those traveling who are not members of the choir will be able to attend the performance as audience members.
Depending on how many choir members travel to Italy, the GFCMSU choir may have the opportunity for a solo performance in Verona.
"We are very excited to offer our first travel abroad opportunity through Lifelong Learning," said Heather Palermo, director of the Center for Lifelong Learning at GFC MSU. "Part of Lifelong Learning is that continuing education can happen all over the world."
In May 2016, the Great Falls College Community Choir traveled to New York City to sing in Carnegie Hall. After the success of that trip, the college wanted to offer another travel opportunity, this time expanding it to include academic credit for students and a chance for community members to join in.
